[post_page_title]A leap of faith[/post_page_title]

An enduring image in popular culture is one of people going over the falls in a barrel – and this is something that actually happened. In 1901, Annie Edson Taylor – a 63-year-old schoolteacher from Michigan – resolved to take the plunge in a barrel.

A leap of faith

Edson went over the falls and was lucky enough to get away with only a minor injury – but she immediately made it clear that such a stunt should never be tried again. Unfortunately, people have not taken her advice, and several people have passed away in their attempts.
