How to Throw an Epicly Geeky Halloween Party

There are many things that make Halloween absolutely amazing. Free candy for the kiddos? Check. The opportunity to dress up as a witch or a goblin? Oh yeah. And an endless stream of silly horror movies on the television? Bring it on. But you know what the best part about Halloween is? The not-so-secret fact that it was totally created for all of the geeks and nerds in the world. I mean, come on. What other time of the year can you dress up as Harry Potter or Captain America and get complimented for it? Of course, nothing brings geeks together quite like an amazing Halloween party. If you’re looking to gather up all of your geeky friends underneath your roof this Halloween, but you’re not quite sure how you can pull off the Halloween party of the year, here are four tips for throwing the ultimate geektastic Halloween bash!

Develop a Fun Theme

All good parties need a theme. There’s no way around it, really. If you want to help make your Halloween party a resounding success, it’s best to establish that theme early on and try to stick with it. Of course, trying to develop a theme can bring its own challenges, especially if you’re not sure how to pull it off. Still stumped? Here are some ideas you can try: Marvel heroes and heroines (or, if you’re feeling bold, villains!), mad scientists, Star Trek red shirts, and even an assortment of your favorite Joss Whedon characters (Buffy meets Firefly anyone?) can make for an eclectic congregation at your party!

Build an Awesome Playlist

It’s a common misconception that geeks don’t know how to cut loose and enjoy themselves. Honestly, that couldn’t be further from the truth! Geeks know how to live it up, but you gotta do your part to draw them to the dance floor. To help motivate them to show off their sick dance moves, you need to curate the right playlist. If your goal is to keep it lighthearted and playful, why not see if you can create a list of upbeat filk music, like something from Voltaire? Or you can try to find your favorite 8-bit video game themes, such as those from Super Mario or Final Fantasy. Worst case scenario, you can pipe out some LotR music and call it a night – nearly every geek can find their groove with that soundtrack playing in the background!

Draw Up a Foolproof Menu

Being a geek is hungry business, and after your friends work up a sweat on the dance floor, they’re going to want to take a break to get their nosh on. You’ll want to make sure you have plenty of tasty foods laid out for them when their appetites wakes up. While it may be tempting to set out punch bowls of Mountain Dew and bags of Cheetos, you’ll want to be a little bit more inventive than that. The good news is that you can’t go wrong with fare like Pocky, though, and bottles of Ramune. But it’s also a good idea to come up with snack ideas that align with your theme. Homemade butterbeer, Turkish delight, and a genuine chocolate cake (one that is not a lie) are all sure bets!

Keep Your Guests from Getting Bored

Finally, you’ll want to make sure your guests stay entertained while they’re chilling at your party. Geeks tend to be sharp cookies (mmm, cookies!), so you need to make sure you have games lined up that both challenge and stimulate the mind. Put your copy of Twister away; this isn’t that kind of party! Instead, try on-theme game ideas like “Pin the Nose on Voldemort” or an impromptu round of D&D to keep your friends regaled. Worst case scenario, you can always whip out your battered copy of Trivial Pursuit. (And yes, we know you already have all of the cards memorized!)

Trying to throw a geeky Halloween bash doesn’t have to be an exercise in stress and futility. If you’re looking to get your cosplaying friends in the spooky holiday spirit, you really can’t go wrong with these four ideas. Just remember that you’re not trying to impress a bunch of strangers. When you’re with geeks, you’re amongst friends. Your party should reflect that. And at the end of the day, as long as you’re true to yourself, your little Halloween shindig should be a resounding success!
